Socialize with others, play games, or build worlds in the newest social VR gaming online platform today.
So much is changing in today's current global situation and the world seems to be rearranging itself at an alarming rate. The interaction between the world's nations due to many underlying factors happening today has created a more urgent need for people all over the globe to communicate, make friends, and seek common ground to counteract the tensions actively existing today. To this, gamers need to engage more in social gaming activities and the more social-oriented games are available online, the better. In the VR industry, probably the most popular VR social online platform would be VRChat. However, it would be best to have current alternatives that could deliver a bit more in terms of features and content value to provide a different VR venue for gamers and casual users to visit.
Riff XR is an alternative social and gaming platform in VR that is currently on early access. The platform is handled and continually being developed by an Icelandic-based company Revog Games. Riff XR is still quite new and is in the process of making its platform an immersive, interesting, and stable go-to for online VR users worldwide. At first glance, the platform performs like a direct alternative to VRChat but one will see that there are some features that make the platform attractive and shine on its own. Here are some of the features one will find interesting that will prove beneficial to the platform’s growth in the coming years.
When you enter the main city space in Riff XR, it will give you a sense of a Ready Player One Oasis environment. The graphics are quite crisp and have a higher resolution quality to it. Aside from other online players walking about, you will come face-to-face with the AI NPCs. A normal NPC will have a set of responses programmed for it but in Riff XR, one can carry a long conversation with an NPC relying on an online AI to answer your questions. This already gives the platform an advantage compared to other current ones today.
Riff XR also gives its users the option to create their own worlds just like in VRChat. The platform has an Unreal Engine 5 SDK that can be downloaded to develop your own map as well as import your own created characters from third-party 3D applications like 3D Studio Max, Blender, and the like. It's a bit of a complicated and technical process but if one is determined to learn how to do it, a self-created world in VR would be a satisfactory reward. Not to worry however for beginners, as the platform will provide those who join at the Early Access stage with their very own complimentary avatar and weapons pack.
There are several places to visit in Riff XR. To facilitate things a lot quicker, one can access the platform's menu from the left wrist/controller. The user interface is friendly and easy to use. There are quite a number of activities that one can engage in while being on the platform. There are dance areas and places where you can mingle with the other player avatars. If you want to play games, there are exciting areas where one can shoot it out with others via a variety of available guns. Hopefully, with the increase of visiting gamers and content creators alike, the platform will be able to expand and broaden its area and activity choices.
Of special mention on the platform is the Art Museum or Gallery. An interesting and impressive place for those who are artists at heart. In the gallery, you will find many classic paintings on display like those of Van Gogh. Aside from admiring the man's talent, you can generate a Van Gogh-inspired painting of your own. The paintings have panels beside them which you can access and with the help of the platform's AI, generate a particular artwork that you instruct it to do. Of course, the new painting will be AI-generated but nevertheless a fun feature to play with. There are even random places on the platform with panels beside blank walls where you could generate graffiti or street artwork of your own. However, the main attraction of the gallery would be the Dream Deck.
Think of the Dream Deck as something like the Holo-Deck in Star Trek. It generates a simulated world based on a painting generated to your instructions by the platform’s AI. The result would be you standing inside the painting with a 360º POV, and in VR, it can be quite amazing. Once you have visited the gallery, you will no doubt have a pretty good idea of the potential of the Riff platform. However, as of now, what the platform needs is for more online VR users to visit and provide their feedback so the developers can continue to tweak out the errors and rough edges of the Riff. With the developer’s patient support and ready assistance, hopefully, more content developers will start coming in to create more worlds for the platform's users to visit and enjoy.
