Experience an excellently developed short film in virtual reality in this interesting storytelling-based game, Colosse. Follow the story of a curious crab hunter in his unexpected encounter with an ancient Colosse and gain some insights behind the existence of the stone giants.

In Colosse, you’ll be experiencing the story from the perspective of the nameless crab hunter in this virtual reality experience. While he was trying to skewer a crab with his spear, a sound reverbed across the area the crab hunter was in. He quickly hid behind some stones only in time to see a huge stone giant, an ancient being known as a Colosse, strode past him. The Colosse seems to be occupied with something though, so taking that opportunity, the crab hunter crept as silently away as he can.

He went into a nearby cove to hide from the Colosse... at least until it was safe for him to continue on his business. He noticed that the cove he entered was filled with weird yet ancient-looking symbols. Some of these symbols look a lot like the pictorial art that ancient cavemen used to draw on the walls of their home. While he was admiring the cave symbols, the Colosse seem to have spotted the crab hunter and lumbered over to the cove.

In his shock, the crab hunter stood frozen on the spot for a brief moment before scampering over some boulders and hid behind them. The Colosse came to a rest right in front of the cave, and to the carb hunter’s surprise, the Colosse bend over so that it could fit its upper torso into the cave. The Colosse appeared to be stretching its arm, trying to reach a strand of particularly juicy-looking seaweed of some sort that was hanging from the wall at the very back of the cave.

While the Colosse was occupied, the crab hunter emerged from his hiding spot and his attention was captured by the brilliantly sparkling blue gem that was embedded at the middle part of the Colosse’s torso... approximately around the part where the heart would have been if it was a human. He climbed to the top of a boulder and tried to reach for it. After several attempts, he managed to grab it. The Colosse, upon the realization that something, or someone, was trying to wrench out its gem, tried to shake off this unwelcomed thief-to-be.

However, this little “tug of war” didn’t go as smoothly for the Colosse. The crab hunter managed to pull out the gem and he tumbled onto the cold and wet ground of the cave. The Colosse moaned in anguish. It stumbled around for a while in panic before finally collapsing onto the ground... dead.

The crab hunter couldn’t believe his luck. He has not only “defeated” a Colosse, he was rewarded with a huge piece of what seems to be a very valuable gem. He scrambled from the spot where he was fallen and reached for his prize. The instant he touched the gem, he became vaporized and was turned into a blue spark. The blue spark danced around for a bit, before merging itself to an empty spot on the decorated cave wall. All that was left of the crab hunter was a wall art, depicting his actions leading up to the death of the Colosse.

If you think the story is astonishing and intriguing enough, well, you should definitely check out its graphics and sound. The visuals in the game aren’t exactly the high-end stuff, but it has a very unique art style that may come as a breath of fresh air for virtual reality gamers. The sound effects in Colosse are perfect as well. I would personally recommend using headphones though is you really want to immerse yourself in the story.

In a nutshell, Colosse is an amazing short story about a crab hunter and an ancient Colosse. It may be a rather short story, but the game itself is a great proof-of-concept of how storytelling could be done in virtual reality. Hopefully, with Colosse paving the way, more developers would embrace the use of virtual reality in creating some brilliant storytelling-based games in the future!
